Our ‘Charity of the Summer’ is…..Hemsby Lifeboat!

by Jun 1, 2018Blog

Every quarter, Trusted Law will be supporting a local charity, and we are delighted to announce that our ‘Charity of the Summer’ is ………Hemsby Lifeboat!

Hemsby Inshore Rescue Service (HIRS) is a voluntary independent lifeboat service based in Hemsby on the Norfolk coast. They are not part of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), nor do they receive any funding from them or from the Government.

None of their members receive any remuneration and they rely entirely on the generosity of the public to keep the service afloat. So, every pound donated really counts and goes towards saving a life.

A brief history

Hemsby Lifeboat was formed in 1976 in response to a number of drownings off Winterton beach. The first boat brought into service was a rubber dinghy which was loaned to HIRS for the summer season of 1976.

They took delivery of their own boat in December 1976 from donations made by the Norfolk Broads Lions who continued to support the service for many years after.

In 1986 a need was identified to have a purpose-built station to be constructed on the beach, which was built by the crew. Thirteen years later they were forced to retreat due to harsh winter tides and constant erosion of the Hemsby beach area.

The late Mr G Watling came to the rescue leasing the HIRS the building they occupy today which is at the entrance of Hemsby Gap.

How they operate

As a ‘declared facility’, HIRS work closely with Coastguard and flanking Lifeboat stations to ensure the coastline is kept safe throughout the year.

The operational area is deemed to be from Waxham to the north and California Cliffs to the south but takes on wider searches if required.

The crew of the Service are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and are paged by Coastguard when they are required.

They save lives at sea and on the Norfolk Broads

The Service also operates a smaller specialist freshwater boat to cover the 125 miles of inland waterways of The Norfolk Broads.

Having such a large area to cover, the freshwater boat is towed to the closest point of entry then launched off the trailer to continue onto the incident.

Please give generously

To reiterate, as an independent Lifeboat, HIRS are responsible for raising their own funds! All of the crew and volunteers, including the shop and fundraising volunteers, rely on the generosity of the public to keep the lifesaving service running. Please donate today!

So why Hemsby Lifeboat

Once again, Trusted Law asked all of its clients and followers to nominate their favourite charity for us to support for our ‘Charity of the Summer’.

Hemsby Lifeboat was nominated by Paul Swinton, along with some other fantastic charities.  After some research and discussions with the charities, we made the decision (such a difficult decision with so many charities!) to choose Hemsby Lifeboat.

Our support

I have pledged to Hemsby Lifeboat that for every new appointment made in June, July and August I will donate a minimum of £10 (increased depending on the service) to the them.

This is not restricted to those who know about this offer – this is for every new client Trusted Law gains during this period!
