What is a Living Will or Advance Decision?

A Living Will or Advance Decision allows you to record any medical treatments that you do not wish to have such as ‘do not resuscitate’ in the event you are unable to make or communicate your own decisions. There are four types of Advance Decision:

  • General Advance Decision
  • Advance Decision defining an intolerable Condition
  • Advance Decision defining Maximum Treatment
  • Advance Decision specifying Treatment Preferences

An Advance Decision only comes into effect when the person making it is no longer capable of making their own decisions.

Be aware that an Advance Decision is normally revoked by an LPA for Health & Welfare, however, a statement can be included in the Advance Decision to allow concurrent documents.

You can record your wishes, feelings, beliefs and values in a supporting Advance Statement, which helps your healthcare team to have a better understanding.

Peace of mind for you

“Many of our clients say that they have ‘peace of mind’ after their Will is finalised. If you have any questions about your Will, please get in touch, we would rather have an informal call with you then have you worrying”

Natalie Chapman, Managing Director
